Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro went to Matamoros, Mexico, this past week (Oct.4, 2019) to meet with asylum seekers, specifically to meet with people with disabilities or who are LGBTQ. Castro spoke out against the Trump Administration’s “Migration Protection Protocols” or “Remain in Mexico” policy that requires asylum seekers to wait in Mexico until their asylum hearing date.
Castro told the liberal/leftist NBC News, "There are thousands of migrants who are suffering because of Trump's Remain in Mexico policy. They are being kidnapped, extorted, and subjected to violence. I want to speak out particularly for the most vulnerable, migrants with disabilities and migrants who are LGBTQ. This policy has particularly hurt them.” If elected president, Castro said he would use an executive order to end the Trump policy.
Castro and NBC News ignore that the Trump policy was enacted because almost 95% of the asylum seekers never returned for their hearings once they entered the country. The policy was instituted to close this loophole and allow asylum seekers to wait in Mexico.
Also, typical of liberal/leftist Democrats, Castro is playing the “gender/disability victim” card. He claims that a particular class of asylum seekers, LGBTQ, and disabled aliens, is suffering from the crime and violence in Mexico. He infers that it is because of discrimination by the Trump administration, too.
However, all asylum seekers are being treated the same, regardless of gender, sexual persuasion, physical abilities, or any other identifiable characteristics. The “Remain in Mexico” policy is about controlling immigration and the border.
Castro and the liberal/leftist news media want to do is embarrass President Trump and undermine the nation’s border security. All immigrants must be screened before they enter the United States, and the national immigration policy must be “America First.”
