The Border Patrol is being overwhelmed by a record number of Central American families and minors who are turning themselves in on their own and asking for asylum in the El Paso sector, which includes all of New Mexico, according to a news report in the March 17, Albuquerque Journal. A big “loophole” in the immigration system allows illegal aliens to be detained and then released, has thousands of illegal aliens using asylum claims to enter and stay in the U.S.
This legal loophole must be closed if the Border Wall is to be effective because under the current system illegal aliens are entering and claiming asylum at established entry points. These illegal alien asylum seekers are then detained, but because detention centers are overcrowded, they are released with a court appearance date and the majority never appear in court and disappear into American society.
Democrats and the liberal press call the surge in asylum seekers arriving on the border a “humanitarian crisis,” but it is a problem caused by legal loopholes and proper border security. The current immigration system is encouraging people to cross illegally, then rewarding with an indefinite stay in the U.S.
