America longer has a mostly agricultural, low skilled economy as it did in the 19th or early 20th century. Today, we need skilled and educate immigrants that can enhance the economy and assimilate into society.
President Trump has proposed a plan for what America needs: a "merit-based" immigration system compliments the "rule of law" and gets rid of the loopholes and outdated laws currently on the books.
America needs educated and skilled workers, and less emphasis on family ties. Currently, approximately 12 percent of immigrants are admitted based on employment and skills, while 66 percent are admitted based on family connections.
Under the new plan, skilled workers admitted would shift to 57 %, and immigrants admitted based on family connections would drop to 33 %.
Ten percent of immigrants would still be admitted on humanitarian or other grounds, but the plan would end the visa lottery program. A new "Build America Visa" program that would recognize "extraordinary talent" and "people with professional and specialized vocations," including exceptional students would take its place.
To make assimilation to our nation easier, potential immigrants would be assessed using a point-based system, accounting for factors including age, English proficiency, whether each candidate has an offer of employment above a certain wage threshold, and educational and vocational certifications. These are critical factors for immigrants to become economically independent rather than wards of the state.
America has always taken care of the world’s poor but cannot do it if we become an impoverished nation and a divided society by importing the world’s poor and uneducated. We must be economically healthy as well as militarily strong to help the world.
