As the COVID-19 pandemic takes its toll on the U.S. economy and put millions of American workers out of work, the Government is recruiting foreign workers into the country. That's incredible and outrageous.
According to Fox News host Tucker Carlson, the Department of Homeland Security has released 20,000 H-2B visas for seasonal workers to take landscaping, food processing, and tourism jobs. There are another 15,000 "bonus visas" that are scheduled to be released in May 2020.
Foreign labor has historically competed with domestic workers in America's free-market economy. However, it is outrageous and insane in a time when American workers are being let go as businesses shut. I worked on a study in for the old Immigration & Naturalization Service in 1985 to see how American workers could be enticed to take jobs illegal aliens usually did (agriculture and service industries).
We found: 1. Welfare benefits were equal to the wages in those unskilled jobs. Why works in the sun when you can stay home and get the same benefits? We need a welfare reform program to "encourage" Americans to work.
2. Many Americans express a "social stigma" toward these jobs because they were perceived as "low class" and "jobs that Americans don't do." We need Americans to understand that all honest work is worthy.
3. There was also the perception by employers that Americans were not motivated to work hard, even in skilled high-tech jobs. American employers and workers need to find common ground and become more familiar with each other.
4. Communities that had the greatest influx of foreign workers, had the lowest wages and poorest standards of living. Job competition between foreign and domestic workers depresses wages and economies.
5. Many guest workers leave their employment and disappear into society to become illegal aliens. Employers must be held responsible for the foreign workers they recruit.
We need an America First economy, including America First employment.
