The San Antonio city council seems to be following other liberal Democrat-led cities in blaming guns for violence rather personal behavior. Last week, on Tuesday, June 26, a city council committee discussed enacting gun control ordinances.
The SA city council’s Public Safety Committee discussed possible ordinances and regulations to address gun violence. The Committee voted 4-1 to discuss ordinances that could create a category of land use for firearm sales and modify bond conditions for people accused of family violence.
Texas law prohibits municipalities from regulating the transfer, ownership, transportation or licensing of firearms, but cities do have the authority to regulate the discharge of firearms, the use of a property and the location of a business that sells firearms.
District 6 Councilman Greg Brockhouse argued that enacting more firearm regulations amounted to “government overreach” and would not stop criminal offenders. But District 2 Councilman William Shaw, from the east side where most of the violence has occurred, said it was “a step in the right direction”.
Liberals continue to focus on and blame an inanimate object, the gun, for the behavior of people. Cars are not blamed for drunk drivers and knives are not blamed for stabbings, but guns are held responsible for shootings.
On the other hand, the culture of violence and anti-social behavior that is prevalent in high crime neighborhoods is rarely addressed. Whether the instrument of violence is a gun, a rock, a stick, a knife or bare hands, it is the person’s behavior that is responsible.
Gun ownership in America is protected by the 2nd Amendment because citizens rule the government, and they must protect themselves against it. Every tyranny in history has always disarmed its citizens.
Unfortunately, the City of San Antonio hasn’t learned from the failures of other liberal cities that strict gun controls (and liberal social policies) don’t stem gun violence or any violence. Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, St. Louis and Baltimore, all liberal Democrat-dominated city governments with strict gun controls and liberal social policies, suffer from the nation’s highest rates of violence.
In the meantime, on Monday, July 2, another murder was reported in San Antonio when a man was found shot to death in a bathroom at an east side park. The city has been classified as one of the most dangerous cities in the state, while it adopts liberal social policies like raising the age for purchasing cigarettes and removing Confederate statues.
San Antonio citizens and voters need to recognize that governments and tyrants always claim to protect the communities by restricting rights, freedoms, and responsibilities. The defense of freedom and liberty starts in your backyard, at city hall, at your precinct, and with your vote.
