Democrat state representative Alfonso “Poncho” Nevarez from Eagle Pass, TX, announced on Thursday morning, Nov. 21, that he was not running for reelection. This announcement came just hours after news broke that he had been accused of dropping an envelope of cocaine at an Austin airport. Later that same day, a warrant was issued for his arrest for felony drug possession, and the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that Nevárez had turned himself over to a Maverick County jail Thursday night and posted a bond of $10,000.
Nevárez announced the week before that he would not seek reelection in 2020 because he was going to put his “family and health” first. The news immediately raised questions about why the four-term state rep would step aside.
However, on Wednesday night, Nov. 20, Direct Action Texas, a conservative news website, published an affidavit that claimed Nevárez dropped an envelope full of cocaine at an Austin airport in September. The Dallas Morning News confirmed the report.
Nevarez did not elaborate to the news media on how he would respond to the criminal charges. The offense for possession of one to four grams of cocaine is punishable by up to two to 10 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.
Maverick County and the City of Eagle Pass, like all of the south Texas border cities and counties, is heavily dominated by Hispanic Democrats. Whether this incident opens the door to conservatives and Republicans remains to be seen.
The Democrats have used race (Hispanic) and the poverty industry to control the politics in the region. They have also use voter fraud and intimidation to manipulate the elections.
The question should be asked if Nevarez would still run for office if he had NOT been accused and arrested for cocaine possession?
