The latest attack on law enforcement is regarding their interaction with the mentally ill because of the police handling of some situations, which resulted in deaths. Progressives and the liberal news media are scapegoating law enforcement officers. However, rather than blaming them, some serious questions need to be asked and discussed.
For example, what is an ill person’s and their family’s responsibility to avoid an incident that requires police intervention? Shouldn’t someone, particularly the family, be responsible for making sure they are taking their medications?
Also, shouldn’t the family be responsible for monitoring the potential for violence and alerting medical staff and law enforcement?
If the person is violent, shouldn’t they be hospitalized to protect themselves and the public?
Where is the responsibility for someone who continually stops taking their medications, and where is the responsibility for a family that “protects” a potentially violent person?
We need to build more hospitals to house “repeat offenders” who have shown their unwillingness or inability to be responsible and regularly stop taking their medications. We must also hold families responsible who don’t monitor their mentally ill relatives, especially if they are violent.
Liberals refuse to take responsibility for another failed social policy, and leftists are using these tragedies for their anti-law enforcement agenda.
Police do their best to handle situations with mentally ill people, but there should be health intervention long before it reaches them. Let have an honest discussion about mental health and stop blaming the police.
