The two most significant issues for San Antonio voters in the city election in May 2021 will be the Left's efforts to defund and punish the police and the city's efforts to limit the citizens' First Amendment rights in the name of COVID-19 public safety.
The radical leftist wants to abolish local police, create doubts in law enforcement and the judicial system, and undermine the United States' Constitution. They want to remove police officers from civil service.
However, it prevents politically-motivated firings and cronyism in the hiring and promotion of public servants. Police are public servants, and if there's any group that needs to be above political influence, it's the police.
The Leftists also oppose the San Antonio Police Officers' Association because they claim bad police officers are protected. However, SAPOA arbitration is necessary because it takes politics out of disciplinary actions. Furthermore, who else advocates for the police when the city elected officials are siding with the anti-police radicals?
The Leftists want police officers punished for any reason, including minor administrative infractions. They ultimately want to embarrass and discourage the police officers and to undermine law and order.
Police are the front lines of public safety. They are an essential part of local and state government, just like roads and streets, water, sewers, and drainage. Police and firefighters are critical to our local government. Police officers, like firefighters, put their lives on the lines daily. Their physical and mental health is at stake, and they need compensation to make that risk worthwhile.
As for COVID-19, San Antonio needs leadership that leads with faith and common sense, not fear and tyranny. It has become a perfect storm for the liberal news media to sensationalized and for leftist politicians to impose government "protections."
As of Wednesday, Dec.2, 2020, there were 82,125 COVID-19 cases reported in Bexar County and 1,371 deaths confirmed among a county-wide population of over 2 million. However, they don't count the number of people who have recovered without hospitalization. The virus is real, and it can be deadly to some people, but is it necessary to shut down the entire county and its economy?
There are issues like gaining control of the San Antonio Water System and the City Public Services and saving the Alamo. Still, unless the citizens have proper police protection and a free economy, nothing else will matter much.
San Antonio must have elect leaders who support law and order, personal and economic freedom, and lower taxes and fees, especially during an economic slowdown. We also need leaders who care more about the voters and taxpayers than the news media.
The defense of freedom and liberty starts locally at the city hall, and the voters of San Antonio must defend their personal and economic freedoms.
