The City of San Antonio settled a lawsuit against the SAPD police chief William McManus for violating the Texas state anti-sanctuary law. The “settlement” is the latest defeat for the City’s liberal/leftist leaders, costing the city taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
On December 23, 2018, the San Antonio police detained a semi-truck smuggling at least twelve illegal immigrants. However, instead of cooperating with federal immigration officials, McManus ordered the illegal aliens released to Catholic Charities in direct violation of the Texas state anti-sanctuary law.
Because the liberal/leftist SA City leadership supports illegal immigration and open borders, they refused to abide by federal immigration laws. They continue to forbid SAPD police officers from asking about the immigration status of any suspect in an investigation.
The $300,000 settlement represents a fraction of the amount the city paid in civil penalties and attorney fees. In addition, Texas State Attorney General Ken Paxton sued McManus and eleven other city officials based on complaints received from private citizens. The complaints accused the City of openly disregarding the state law, Senate Bill 4, which requires local governments to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
The City also falsely alleged the SA police association had conspired against the Police chief for political reasons in the complaint. Sadly, the local liberal news media defended the City’s actions and policies in favor of illegal aliens they call “migrants.”
The City’s policies protecting and rewarding illegal alien criminals will endanger law-abiding citizens. In addition, both City SAPD and the County Sheriff have policies that ignore the immigration status of suspects, which provides a loophole for illegal alien criminals.
Whether the City of San Antonio continues to excuse, protect, and reward illegal aliens is the question law-abiding citizens and voters should answer. But unfortunately, illegal aliens will continue to flood into the community while the Biden Administration refuses to enforce immigration laws and secure the border.
