The San Antonio Police Department has installed a new touchless temperature detection camera system at its headquarters that will be able to scan 2,000 persons an hour quickly and accurately. The question is, “then what?” Is this a role for law enforcement, and if someone tests with a higher or lower temperature, what will happen?
According to the report, the Temperature Detection Cameras can scan a person and alert the officers instantly if an elevated temperature is present. A person who has high temperature will be reported and probably denied entrance to the building.
But after that what? Other detection cameras will undoubtedly be operating at other buildings in the near future. Will “sick” people be quarantined or segregated? If AIDS has privacy protections, why not COVID-19?
Will law enforcement officers or other government officials carry detection cameras to identify “sick people” in public? Isn’t this a role for health professionals and the privacy of citizens, or is this another route to push a national government public health system?
We are entering a very dangerous, questionable, and unconstitutional for the government. This new action by the City appears to be another infringement by local tyrants on individual rights in the name of public safety.
Dictators always use the greater good as an excuse to limit personal freedom.
